Grantee Update: Purdue Extension

2023 Grant Recipient $450: Helen and Jim Ewing Fund To Help the Elderly and Feed the Hungry

The American Diabetes Association estimates that at least 1.7 million Hoosiers are living with prediabetes. To help with prevention and awareness, Purdue Extension hosts “Dining with Diabetes” programs throughout the year. The cooking program is a cooking school for people with diabetes, those at risk for diabetes, and caregivers of those with diabetes. Consisting of four weekly sessions and a three-month reunion sessions, offers practical approaches to eating well for those with type 2 diabetes, their caregivers and those looking to make changes in their overall health. Partnering with Rush Memorial Hospital, Diana Stone, Purdue Extension Educator, participants received educational information, recipes for each week, and additional handouts relevant to the topic and discussion of the week. As with any good cooking class, taste testing was a must!

With assistance from the Helen and Jim Ewing Fund, those requiring financial assistance to attend the program were able to take advantage of the opportunity to learn skills that help them lead a healthier lifestyle.
